Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2 is a 2D platforming remake of the Super Nintendo (SNES) classic, released for the Game Boy Advance (GBA) in 2001. It follows Mario and Luigi as they travel through Dinosaur Land to rescue Princess Peach and several trapped Yoshis from Bowser and the Koopalings.
Core Gameplay & Features
- Massive World: The game includes all 96 levels from the original SNES version, spanning nine worlds from Yoshi's Island to the hidden Special World.
- Playable Characters: Unlike the original, which only featured Luigi in a 2-player mode, the GBA version allows players to swap between Mario and Luigi at any time on the map.
- Luigi's Traits: In this version, Luigi is not just a palette swap; he has distinct physics, such as a higher, floatier jump and the ability to scuttle in the air.
- Yoshi: Players can ride various colored Yoshis (Green, Red, Blue, and Yellow), each with unique abilities when holding different colored Koopa shells in their mouths.
- Power-Ups: Iconic items include the Cape Feather for flight and the Fire Flower for shooting fireballs.
- Bonus Game: Every cartridge includes a remake of the original Mario Bros. arcade game, which supports up to 4-player multiplayer via Link Cable.
Key Changes from the SNES Original
- Visuals & Sound: Due to the GBA's smaller screen and lack of a backlight at the time, colors were significantly brightened. Characters now have voice clips (recorded by Charles Martinet) for actions like jumping or taking damage.
- Difficulty Tweaks: If Mario or Luigi is powered up (e.g., has a Cape or Fire Flower) and takes a hit, they only shrink to Super Mario (Big) rather than reverting all the way to Small Mario.
- Convenience: The GBA version features a save-anywhere system, whereas the original only allowed saving after beating specific levels like Castles or Ghost Houses.
- Completion Tracking: A new "Records" menu tracks your progress, including which levels were cleared by which brother and if all Dragon Coins have been found in every stage.
